New mid-season trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks, full panel, and a surprise guest announcement
I must admit, it took me a couple of episodes to warm up to Star Trek: Lower Decks. It was strange to see the franchise I love as a comedy animated series that was frantic and fast paced with characters who were bumbling, idiotic and dare I say it, annoying? But in fairness I did feel a similar way to Star Trek: Enterprise when I watched that series in full for the first time. OK the comparisons a little off they were not an animated series and were very capable characters, but it took me a while to adjust to these latest additions to the Trek franchise and when I got used to the concept, I saw it for what it was; the same can be said for Lower Decks.
It is a comedy show and comedy as we know is subjective and there will be times that for me, it will really miss the mark and there will be times when its bang on the money. So far, I have found it very amusing and I have enjoyed the little nods to Star Trek past via the shows Easter eggs. I also understand the opinion of fans who just do not like this show, who say it’s not true Trek, to introduce this type of show into the Trek Universe IS a gamble but it also extends the reach for potential new fans. This is an adult animation in the mould of what can be found on Adult Swim which is a huge show in the US and gathering a similar following here in the UK thanks to E4. To have one of the creators of Rick and Morty behind it as well draws in a massive potential fan base to a franchise that some might have thought was of no interest to them. As we know if the fan base grows, then there is the potential for more Trek to come which can only be a good thing.
As you know Star Trek Day was hosted online by Star Trek CBS recently and as a result, we got a lot more Lower Decks information. Along with the cast chatting about the show with creator Mike McMahan and sharing their obvious love of the property, we were treated to a few tasty tit bits. The first being a new ‘coming up’ trailer showcasing what’s to come in the shows second season.

Lots to look forward to in that trailer, however, I think we can ALL agree on the fact that it will be amazing to see the one and only John De Lancie returning as Q who we last saw in the Star Trek: Voyager episode ‘Q2’ in 2001.
Now I don’t know about you, but this could be a great format for John De Lancie to stretch his comedy muscles once again. We have seen his dry wit and humour in Next Generation Episodes such as ‘Deja Q’ and ‘Tapestry’ and in animated form I can’t wait to see what they have in store for him.
