Trek This Out: Weekly Roundup Stardate: 2010.11

David Milburn

Trek This Out returns for another weekly roundup of tidbits from around the Star Trek Universe that you might have missed including Kurtzmans 7 year plan, Star Trek Onlines latest release and Trek alum on the side of Biden in the US Presidential campaign.

Alex Kurtzman says Discovery has years to run and is mapping a 7 year plan for Star Trek

Rumours of his sacking appear to be greatly exaggerated it would seem as Alex Kurtzman recently sat down with the Hollywood Reporters TV Podcast to discuss all things Star Trek and was asked about the future of the franchise and Star Trek: Discovery.

“I’m going to say, in all honesty, there are years and years left on Discovery.

I think that because Star Trek, in general, has had a long history of going something like seven seasons minimum, and we just jumped into the future… it’s not that it’s a brand new show, but it’s a whole new set of variables with a whole new set of ideas and stories, and I don’t think we limit ourselves to thinking, “Oh, we’re capped at this place.”

I’ll tell you, when the show starts to feel stale to us, we will be rallying to stop it — but for now it doesn’t feel like we are running into a shortage of stories.

Heather Kaden and Aaron Baiers, who work with me at Secret Hideout — we literally just got of a call with the network mapping out [plans for Star Trek] through 2027.

Now when I say that, it’s not like it’s set in stone. It’s just, “Here’s a plan. Here’s what we’re looking at. Here’s how the different shows are going to drop.”

Consider the fact that it takes a year from inception — from starting production — to airing, you have to plan way, way, way in advance to get these things done, and you have to stay on top of the zeitgeists and make sure that what you’re doing is relevant.

So you have to plan so far in advance now in different kinds of ways [like safety and budget] to seem loose and improvisational, but there’s nothing loose and improvisational about it.”

So plenty of more Star Trek to come it would seem. Of course due to the time it takes to write and produce a TV series the cope and size of modern Star Trek, it’s unlikely that this planned 7 years will incorporate any new spin off shows and will be purely focused on the production of more Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds and Section 31. I mean, that’s a LOT of Trek!

Star Trek: Online ‘House Shattered’ Now Available.

I’m not a big gamer, I used to be but as I have gotten older it appears that my brain cannot send the commands needed to my fingers fast enough to cope with the demands of modern games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like games anymore; now I just sit on the sidelines watching Youtubers and Twitchers do what I only wish I could do. One of my fav games in recent years of course was Star Trek: Online and in the past week, they have launched a new season of the incredibly popular free to play game called ‘House Shattered’ a Klingon focused story. Below is the launch trailer and story synopsis.

“First, the House was Divided, now it will be Shattered. Following the events of June’s House Divided, Captains found themselves on the run, accused of a crime they didn’t commit. Chancellor J’mpok of the Klingon Empire has gone mad with power and jealousy, partnering with Aakar, Gowron’s grandfather, to devastate the peaceful planet of Khitomer. Attempting to destroy all his enemies at once, he framed this crime on the renegade Klingon Matriarch J’ula, legendary General Martok, and you. Now, this ramshackle alliance must find a way to clear their names and try and set things right. With help from the mysterious Witch of Nimbus III, Adet’pa, they might do it, but even that won’t set everything right. If J’mpok is removed from power, there is nothing standing in J’ula’s way of seizing control – and she may be no better than the Mad Chancellor.

House Shattered is our latest story update to Star Trek Online. In it, you’ll find a brand new episode, “Partisans,” where Captains can team up with Martok, J’ula, Adet’pa and the crew of the Orion Syndicate ship The Coldstar, in a race to find the evidence to clear their names. J.G Hertzler as Martok, Robert O’Reilly as Aakar, and Rekha Sharma as Adet’pa all return to Star Trek Online in this brand new adventure that advances the story began in House Divided.

In addition, a brand new Task Force Operation, Synth Wave, takes Captains to the infamous invasion of Mars from Star Trek: Picard. With Utopia Planetia’s android workforce in revolt, how many lives can you save? This scenario brings a brand new gameplay style, with an ever-shrinking environment and wave after wave of Synth ships closing in.

With House Shattered, we’re also adding a brand new ship to the Infinity Lock Box, the Mirror Warship. This Constitution-class ship is overhauled by technology from the Mirror Universe, and turned into a devastating flagship of the Empress. Five new items from Star Trek: Enterprise are joining the Lobi Store, allowing access to long awaited items like the M.A.C.O. Rifle.

The Experimental Upgrade System is live today as well. For a limited time, everyone in the game gets one of these tokens for free, allowing them to add a Device Slot, a Console Slot, and a new Trait Slot to their favorite T5-U or T6 ships. This brand new system brings exciting new options to your favorite ships. Additional tokens are available in the Ultra Rare tier of the Phoenix Prize Pack, and the Zen Store.

Finally, as part of the Year of Klingon, we’ve updated the Warzone Mission Arc for Klingon characters. Play through two completely remade maps, gameplay improvements across all missions, brand new cutscenes, and the debut of Shannon Cochran as the voice of Lady Sirella. Female Klingon Captains will find new head options available, as well.

We can’t wait to see you fight to clear your names, Captains. Qapla!”

Star Trek alum supporting Joe Biden in US Presidential Election

This one is more for our American readers if you are in the UK you will not be to access this online event as it seems to be for US citizens only. ‘Trek the Vote to Victory’ will 19 Star Trek actors including Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, George Takei, Isa Briones, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Frakes, Kate Mulgrew, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Patrick Stewart, Sonequa Martin-Green and more participate in in a virtual panel on Tuesday 13th October. It seems to be part fundraiser and to help Biden gain more votes in the upcoming elections. From our point of view, it might be a panel that discusses Star Trek but could and more likely be more political in nature. I do hope that once the election is over that they make this available online to view at some point.

Star Trek: The Animated Series now officially canon?!

This has been something that has been debated for a while and I still haven’t seen any official confirmation that the original Animated Series is indeed canon in Star Trek. I for one have always considered that it was, and I think the recent Lower Decks finale has made it so. Below is one of our tweets with a little screengrab from episode 8 of Lower Decks.
